The Henderson County Genealogical and Historical Society publishes a quarterly Journal. The Journals feature Bible and other family records, cemetery surveys, military records, transcriptions of county records, and articles concerning Henderson County history and genealogy. The Society encourages members to submit articles for possible publication.
The Society’s newest publication Minutes of the Henderson County, North Carolina Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions 1839-1848, a hard-bound, indexed volume of approximately 500 pages, is now available for purchase. In North Carolina, the County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions served as the primary administrative and judicial body of government for each county from the early days of the Carolinas until 1868. The official records of these sessions are the minutes kept by the Clerk of the Court, and they constitute the single most important record of the counties. The proceedings include estate settlements, wills, property surveys, jury lists, election of judges, school trustees, appointments of county officials, road building and maintenance, erection of public buildings, levying of taxes, appointment of guardians for minors, bastardy suits, small court cases, and any other “civil” action required by counties. The names of more people appear in these records than in any other county records, making them an important genealogical tool.
The Society published The Heritage of Henderson County, Volume I in 1985 (reprinted in 2003) and The Heritage of Henderson County, Volume II in 1988. The heavily illustrated heritage volumes contain sketches of Henderson County families, histories of churches and schools, and other articles of historical interest. After five years of intensive groundwork the Society published Henderson County North Carolina Cemeteries in 1995. The cemetery book attempts to survey all known public and private cemeteries in Henderson County. Other Society publications include Index to Henderson County, NC Births 1914-1942 by Patricia Thames with Raleigh Fletcher and Leon Pace, Index to Henderson County, NC Deaths 1914-1956 by Patricia Thames, and Henderson County NC World War I Draft Registrations by Ray Rhoads. Heritage Volumes I and II, Birth Index, Death Index and World War I Draft Registrations are available for purchase. The cemetery book is out of print; however, its contents are available on CD in PDF format.
In addition to the Society’s publications, we have many other books about Henderson County and the surrounding area for sale. Please contact us for a complete list and order form (email@example.com).
